Keeper’s Log, September 29

Ashland Breakwater Light Station, September 29, 1922

Water Company arrived to find cause of water rising in the street. Found the cause to be a broken water pipe on the property. Telegraphed to Detroit for permission to install new lead pipe. Installation of pipe was approved. Received a letter from Detroit that Mrs. Bergan would be appointed temporary keeper until the new keeper arrives.

Poor Mrs. Bergan- as if she needs more headaches at this point, with her husband dead less than a week.

Below, the Ashland keeper’s dwelling in 2005, on a quiet side street overlooking the water. Very different conditions that the island families experienced!
