Sand Island Light Station, October 21, 1905
W gale and cloudy, cold, freezing. Keeper found a piece of one dollar bill in Justice Bay. The first money he found since the wreck.
Hmmmm… guess the rumors were already starting to get back to Emmanuel Luick.
“You know, the lighthouse keeper spent an awful lot of time walking up and down the beach looking for bodies. And you know what? There wasn’t a red cent on any of ‘em when Mr. Sense the undertaker came to pick them up. But Lord, that Luick is spending mighty free these days. Makes ya wonder….”
Interesting to see how quickly they apparently spread after the loss of the Sevona barely six weeks since.
You do what you’ve gotta do, I guess.
Most of the old island people would rather go without than to take what didn’t belong to them.
