Keeper’s Log, November 27

Outer Island Light Station, November 27, 1874

Terrible gale, NW. Closed the Light today as it was so cold we couldn’t run it any longer and we thought there was no necessity as it had been so cold and such bad weather since the 10th of this month that it was almost imposable for any thing to live outside. Teriable gales all the time. It was imposable to keep the ice off from the lanterns on the inside. We used strong brine but the ice would form as fast as we got it off.

And so closes a disastrous first quarter for the Outer Island team!
