Guest Commentary For Veterans Day

…just slightly late.

From my friend Dave O’s wonderful Lake Superior blog, The Lake Is The Boss:

…I don’t think floating little paper boats down the river on the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing does a damn thing to advance world peace. I always think of the old man and the same comment every year at that event: “I’ll bet the guys on the Arizona would get a real kick out of this shit.”

Every time I hear about some earnest fool folding “peace cranes,” I find myself wishing I had the origami chops to make a bunch of Peace Mushrooms.

Distasteful as it may seem to delicate sensibilities, no other discrete incident in history, excepting perhaps the discovery of penicillin, saved so many lives as the missions carried out by the 509th Composite Bombing Group on August 6 and 9, 1945.
