Conclusion

In the years of its existence, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has taken many steps to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of the archipelago. Just to name a few, the NPS has:

  • Secured ownership of six historic light stations and committed itself to their care.

  • Protected the Outer and Raspberry Island Light Stations from imminent anger of erosion through massive bank stabilization efforts.

  • Arrested deterioration due to moisture infiltration at Devils, Outer, and Michigan Island light stations.

  • Restored the Raspberry Island Lighthouse to its historic appearance.

  • Remediated the damage done to the Chequamegon Point and new Michigan Island light towers by ill-considered actions taken before NPS ownership.

  • Repaired and reinstalled the classical Devils Island Fresnel lens damaged and improperly removed by another agency.

  • Restored the Manitou Fish Camp and the Hokenson Brothers Fishery.

  • Promoted scholarship through sponsorship of numerous historic and archeological studies.

The Service has every right to be proud of this record of accomplishment. Future management of the National Lakeshore should strive to excel this record, not abandon it.
